Long before modern internet memes dominated pop culture, the Wayans brothers changed the comedy landscape forever with the release of the original Scary Movie (2000). Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, this R-rated parody powerhouse grossed a staggering $278 million globally and spawned a massive multi-film franchise.
While the movie is packed from start to finish with hilarious, unhinged pop-culture gags, it actually follows a structured slasher mystery. If you just re-watched this classic on your favorite streaming service and want a breakdown of the iconic final twist, the killer's true identity, and how it brilliantly flipped the script on Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, we have you covered!

The Premise: "A Killer Is Among Us"
The plot kicks off exactly like the 1990s slasher films it lampoons. A group of dysfunctional high school teenagers—Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris), her boyfriend Bobby, the high-strung Brenda, the dim-witted Greg, the popular Buffy, and the stoner Shorty (Marlon Wayans)—are being stalked by a masked serial killer known as Ghostface (or the "Wassaap" Killer).
The reason? Exactly one year prior, the group accidentally ran over a man with their car, dumped his body in a lake, and swore to take the secret to their graves. Now, Ghostface is picking them off one by one in increasingly absurd, comedic ways.
The Climax: The House Party Massacre
The finale takes place during a massive house party at Cindy's house, heavily mimicking the climax of Wes Craven's Scream. As Ghostface slashes his way through the guests, Cindy's boyfriend Bobby and his best friend Ray reveal themselves to be the killers! They corner Cindy in the kitchen, claiming they stabbed Cindy's father and framed him for the murders.
However, in a hilarious parody twist, Ray breaks character and brutally stabs Bobby instead, revealing his own hidden motives. Before Ray can kill Cindy, the real Ghostface suddenly appears out of nowhere and stabs Ray, leaving Cindy as the final girl standing.
The Final Twist Ending Explained: Who Was the Real Killer?
After surviving the night, Cindy is at the police station giving her statement to the Sheriff. She suddenly glances at a composite sketch on the wall and realizes a shocking, mind-blowing truth.
The real mastermind behind the Ghostface mask wasn't Bobby or Ray. It was Doofy Gilmore (Dave Sheridan)—the seemingly dim-witted, mentally challenged brother of Buffy who worked as a school safety officer!
In a brilliant, beat-for-beat parody of the iconic ending of The Usual Suspects, Doofy walks out of the police station, completely sheds his fake limp, throws away his vacuum cleaner, strips off his goofy clothes to reveal a slick leather jacket, fixes his hair, and jumps into a getaway car driven by the local news reporter, Gail Hailstorm. Doofy had successfully faked his entire identity to orchestrate the town's ultimate killing spree and get away scot-free.
The Tragic (and Hilarious) Post-Credits Fate of Cindy
Just as Cindy realizes Doofy's true identity, she runs out into the middle of the street, screaming in shock. However, instead of a dramatic confrontation, the movie ends on one final, abrupt comedic note: Cindy is instantly slammed into and run over by a speeding car, leaving her fate completely up in the air until the sequel.
The DH Plex Verdict
Scary Movie remains an absolute cultural milestone. By blending the genuine tension of 90s horror with fearless, boundary-pushing slapstick comedy, the Wayans brothers created a timeless parody blueprint that people still quote decades later.
