The Premise: Shao Kahn's Unfair Game
The movie opens with a brutal flashback to the fallen kingdom of Edenia, where the tyrannical Emperor Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford) ruthlessly slaughters King Jerrod and forces Queen Sindel and Princess Kitana into his royal court.
Cut to the present day: Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) and Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) recruit Johnny Cage to join Earthrealm’s fighters. However, the tournament quickly spirals into chaos. The sinister sorcerer Shang Tsung (Chin Han) uses the necromancer Quan Chi to tilt the odds.
The villains resurrect Kano and Kung Lao, and use Shinnok’s magical amulet to completely drain Lord Raiden of his thunder-god powers, rendering him a vulnerable mortal. Armed with Raiden's stolen divinity, Shao Kahn enters "god mode" and begins a horrific slaughter of Earthrealm's champions.
The Relentless Casualties: Who Dies?
Mortal Kombat II does not hold back on the gore, shocking fans by wiping out major protagonists in brutal fashion:
*❌ Cole Young: In the ultimate response to fan feedback, the protagonist of the 2021 movie is shockingly killed early on. Shao Kahn brutally smashes Cole's head into ground beef with his warhammer before sweeping his remains into an acid pit.
*❌ Jax: The metal-armed hero suffers a definitive fatality when Shao Kahn drives the spiked tip of his hammer straight through his neck.
*❌ Revenant Kung Lao: After being brought back as an evil undead revenant, Kung Lao faces his former brother Liu Kang, who is forced to execute a classic buzzsaw-hat fatality on him.

The Climax: Johnny Cage Steps Up & Kitana’s Revenge
With Outworld on the brink of absolute victory, Earthrealm’s remaining survivors stage a desperate counter-heist. Johnny Cage, Kano, Jade, and Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) journey into the dark Netherrealm to track down the amulet, which is being guarded by Bi-Han (now operating as Noob Saibot).
During the frantic clash, Johnny Cage finally unlocks his signature emerald Arcana. He delivers a spectacular Shadow Kick that shatters Shinnok’s amulet into pieces.
The moment the amulet shatters, Lord Raiden’s godlike powers instantly return to him at his Sky Fortress, allowing him to easily overpower and blast Shang Tsung off a cliff. Meanwhile, back in the arena, a stripped-of-power Shao Kahn is left completely vulnerable. Fuelled by centuries of vengeance for her father, Kitana uses her bladed steel fans to literally shred Shao Kahn’s head into pieces, winning the tournament for Earthrealm!
The Ending and Liu Kang's Fate Explained
The most mysterious part of the ending involves Liu Kang (Ludi Lin). During the final throne room chaos, Liu Kang appears to be impaled and killed by Shao Kahn. However, instead of dying a standard death, his body disintegrates into a puff of glowing, fiery embers.
As Director Simon McQuoid confirmed, Liu Kang intentionally allowed his physical body to perish so his spirit could ascend and descend directly into the Netherrealm. His true mission is to find his fallen brother and discover a supernatural way to break the dark magic binding the revenants.
Setting the Stage for Mortal Kombat 3
The movie wraps up with Kitana officially crowned as the new, rightful Queen of Edenia. But the war is far from over.
The final scene reveals that Earthrealm’s surviving alliance—led by Raiden, Sonya, and a newly confident Johnny Cage—have successfully taken the sorcerer Quan Chi as their prisoner. Armed with his dark necromancy secrets, the team sets off on a dangerous quest into the Netherrealm.
The stage is perfectly set for Mortal Kombat 3, which will center on a massive rescue mission to systematically resurrect and bring back their fallen friends (including Cole, Jax, and Kung Lao) from the afterlife!
