Move over traditional slashers—the most unsettling and talked-about horror film of the year has officially arrived! Written and directed by internet comedy breakout Curry Barker, Obsession takes the classic "be careful what you wish for" trope and turns it into a modern, psychological nightmare.

If you just crawled out of the theater completely stunned by that sudden, tragic apartment finale, you are not alone. We are breaking down the entire plot, how the supernatural rules worked, and exactly what that jaw-dropping ending means for our main characters.

The Premise: The "Nice Guy" Trap
The film follows Bear (Michael Johnston), a socially anxious music store employee who has a massive, unconfessed crush on his coworker and childhood friend, Nikki (Inde Navarrette). Terrified of direct vulnerability and rejection, Bear completely freezes when Nikki leaves the door open for him to confess his true feelings.
Instead of being honest, he buys a mysterious, cheap novelty item from a local occult store called the One Wish Willow. In a moment of desperation, he snaps the branch and utters a fateful command: "I wish Nikki Freeman loved me more than anyone in the fucking world."

The Curse: When Devotion Becomes Horror
The magic works instantly, but not in the way Bear imagined. Nikki’s mind and body are instantly hijacked by a relentless supernatural force.
She goes from a regular, warm friend to a manic, deeply distressed stalker who literally cannot bear to be separated from him for a single second. Her infatuation quickly spirals out of control: she aggressively surveils him, cuts his hair while he sleeps, and even uses his recently deceased pet cat for a grotesque home decor project.
The horror of Obsession doesn't stem from traditional ghosts or demons; it stems from the absolute loss of human autonomy. Nikki is fully conscious inside her own mind, desperately trapped and screaming, while her body is physically forced to act out Bear's depraved wish.

The Brutal Climax and Ending Explained
As the bodies pile up—with Nikki brutally killing their mutual friends Sarah and Ian under the influence of the curse—Bear finally realizes the absolute monster he has become by stripping away her consent. Desperate to free her, he locks himself in the bathroom to take his own life using an overdose of sleeping pills, believing his death will break the spell.
However, right before the pills take full effect, Bear suddenly stops trying to fight the overdose. A look of complete, hollowed-out adoration washes over his face as a distinct One Wish Willow chime rings out in the background.
He walks into the living room to discover a horrifying twist: the possessed, desperate Nikki snapped another branch and made a counter-wish: She wished for Bear to love her exactly as intensely as she loves him.
For one brief, tragic moment, the two are completely, supernaturally in love. They embrace, and Bear immediately foams at the mouth and dies from the overdose right in her arms.

The Tragic Final Shot: Who Survives?
The moment Bear's heart stops beating, his original wish dies with him. The curse immediately lifts, and the real Nikki instantly crashes back into control of her own body.
The film ends on a devastating note. Nikki looks down in pure, unadulterated horror at the corpse of Bear in her arms, realizing that her own hands were forced to murder her best friends. While she is physically free, she is left entirely destroyed, standing alone in the silent wreckage of a nightmare she didn't choose.

The DH Plex Verdict
Obsession is an absolute masterpiece of modern Gen-Z psychological horror. It perfectly strips away the fantasy of romance as a form of ownership and exposes how terrifying love can look when it completely lacks mutual consent.
